I just finished an article in Bicycling magazine, tucked away amid coverage of Tour de France and canonization calls for Lance Armstrong, about a family's experiment to live car free for one month. Having just taken a similar pledge by signing up with New Belgium's Team Wonderbike, I was excited and intruiged to see a family, including two kids, take on the challenge. This tells me a few things: that the phenomenon is growing and is nationwide, this family lives in New England, and that the national media, albeit a genre specific magazine, is interested in publishing the accounts of bicylcing activists.
The article accounts for the challenges and successes that go along with any lifestyle change, but it also points out an important fact, that change leads to greater change.
As the summer picks up speed and the weather is fine, I'd like to challenge people to consider riding a bike, and then act on that consideration. Whether it's to the bar for a beer, to a friends house for lunch, or to work, try making the trip on two wheels, under your own power, and at a slower pace. I think you'll find that the experience is fun, that you feel great and that you will have earned that guilt free beer or dessert. Not only will you feel better, a positive outcome that grows exponentialy the longer you do it, but you'll be doing the planet a solid in addition. So get out there and ride, enjoy the scenery, be vigilant, and catch yourself smiling at the strangest things.
